There is a little island situated south of Mexico City, in between the canals of Xochimico, that is one of the saddest, creepiest locations you will ever discover. It’s called The Island of the Dolls (Isla de las Muñecas).
Mutilated dolls hang from trees all over the island.
As you might imagine the tragic legend behind the dolls.
It was rumored that several years earlier, a little girl drowned there under strange conditions.
Now, her spirit has possessed the numerous dolls that are hanging around the island.
What really was, the caretaker of the island, Don Julian Santana Barrera, DID discover a little girl drowning and was not able to rescue her.
The story is that he discovered a doll drifting in the water after the misfortune happened and hung it up in a tree as a tribute to honor the girl’s memory.
And he has been adding dolls ever since.
There are individuals who do not believe the caretaker’s story.
For fifty years, Julian hung dolls in trees in honor of lost little girls.
The dolls just got more and more.
Soon the entire place was filled with dolls.
Broken dolls make the place creepy and spooky.
One day he, too, was discovered drowned.
Now, all that remain are just memories and heaps lonely dolls.
